General Description

With larger-than-usual flowers in a sweet pink with deeper rose and light yellow center eyes, Viper Pink periwinkle looks like a sun-loving impatiens. A tropical evergreen shrub that is popularly grown as a tender annual, it is native to the island of Madagascar off the southeastern coast of Africa.

The 'Viper Pink' was developed by British breeders at FloraNova to be earlier-flowering and has large-sized blossoms with overlapping petals. All plants in the Viper Series have good tolerance to the intense summer heat and dry soils, with some resistance to leaf rot and bud drop common to periwinkles that grow in very moist conditions. Viper Pink periwinkle blooms continuously and bears showy, radial, overlapping petal blooms of light pink with dark rose at petal bases across the growing season. It is recommended as a top-performer for massed landscape plantings and designs.

Periwinkle grows best in sites with full to partial sun and poor to fertile, friable, well-drained soils, including those near the seashore and in confined containerized plantings. This tough ornamental can be used as a bedding annual or allowed to rejuvenate as a reseeding perennial. In tropical regions, where 'Viper Pink' will become a mounded semi-woody shrub, it can be planted in mixed shrub borders or as a specimen or foundation plant. Madagascar periwinkle deteriorates and rots in poorly drained or very heavy soils. It will reseed itself into the landscape, excelling in sunny, dry areas of the landscape, potentially being invasive in certain regions.
