CELOSIA argentea 'New Look'

Image of Celosia argentea 'New Look' (Plumosa Group, NEW LOOK SERIES)

Maureen Gilmer

Family

Amaranthaceae

Botanical Name

CELOSIA argentea 'New Look'( Plumosa Group, NEW LOOK SERIES)

Plant Common Name

New Look Red Plume Cockscomb, Plume Cockscomb

General Description

What a striking plume cockscomb! The rich red pyramidal plumes of ‘New Look’ cockscomb make a beautiful addition to annual borders and containers. This AAS winner is a dwarf, bushy annual that may occasionally survive for a year or more in southern regions where winters are mild. It grows quickly from seed and has large, purple-red leaves that contrast beautifully with its cheerful blooms. The long-lasting flowers are dense, plume-like and comprised of many small bracted flowers of red. When they age they begin to turn brown and should be removed to encourage more to appear.

Plant this ornamental in sites with full sun and average soil with good drainage, and enjoy it in any hot, sunny spot that needs strong summer color. The flowerheads of Celosia argentea may be used in fresh flower arrangements or dried as an everlasting. Seed-eating birds are drawn to the small, shiny black seeds that rain down from the mature, dry seedheads, so it is good to let a few mature in fall.
