General Description

A low, petite, flowering succulent groundcover, this iceplant spreads by creeping stems, but it is not an invasive weed. Tolerant of limited light frosts, this evergreen perennial is native to South Africa.

The tiny leaves are finger-like and a bright green, although blush slightly purple or red when growing in intense sunlight. In mid- to late winter, deep rosy-pink, daisy-like flowers appear just above the carpet of succulent leaves. Individually, a blossom may have subtle hints of pink-orange in the petal bases. Bees flock to the flowers for pollen and nectar.

Grow Cephalophyllum stayneri in nearly full sun to partial shade in a gritty, fast-draining soil enriched with some organic matter. The soil may be low or moderate in fertility without detriment to this succulent. In hot desert regions, shade in the afternoon keeps the plants looking their best. Often the most growth occurs from fall to spring, when the soil should be barely moist. In the intense heat of summer, when plants may go partially dormant, keep the soil on the dry side to prevent root and leaf rot. In good growing conditions, the sprawling stems root on the soil to form a dense, low carpet among rocks or stepping stones. This groundcover may also be grown in containers indoors or out, but high humidity and overwatering always lead to this plant's demise.
