General Description

Semi-formal in appearance without the need for pruning, the Harrington's plum yew selection 'Fastigiata' grows as a broad, upright shrub with noticeably vertical branches. It is yew-like (Taxus) in appearance and has glossy, flattened blackish-green needles with silvery bands on their undersides. Though technically coniferous, its round fruits have a fleshy, purple-red exterior, much like that of true yews. Fruits only exist on female plants and appear in late summer to fall.

The upright Harrington's plum yew grows well in sandy, well-drained soil as well as non-compacted clay. Moist soil is best, but established plants tolerate moderate drought. Where climates are cool it can be planted in full sun, but otherwise it needs partial sun to partial shade. 'Fastigiata' is heat tolerant and more shade tolerant than many conifers making it especially useful in warm climate gardens and where foraging deer are problematic. Plum yew must not be exposed to drying winds, and looks best planted in a large bed, such as under trees at the edge of a woodland or park. Plant flowering shrubs in front of it for a pleasant landscape display.
