CERASUS campanulata

Carol Cloud Bailey

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

CERASUS campanulata

Plant Common Name

Bell Flower Cherry

General Description

Filling its branches with dense clusters of pink to deep pink-red flowers in late winter, the Taiwan cherry is a fantastic tree for warm winter regions where traditional flowering cherry trees grow poorly. A deciduous cherry tree that has an oval but spreading canopy, it is native to the mid-elevations of southern China, Taiwan, southern Japan and Vietnam.

In late winter to early spring while the branches are still leafless, they fill with flowers. Each flower hangs downward and resembles a bell or a woman's skirt. The petals are violet-pink to coral-red-pink. Bees pollinate the flowers, which give way to small oval, deep-red fruits that eventually turn black. This tree has blackened red-brown bark and its leaves are oval and mid-green in color, becoming bronzed in autumn.

Grow Taiwan cherry in full sun for best form and flowering, but partial shade is preferred in areas with brutally hot summers. Plant it in fertile, moist soil with good drainage. It makes a lovely accent tree for the lawn or a park-like setting, and it is particularly stunning when grown with multiple trunks. This species, which lives for about 10-15 years, is one of the parents of the popular Okame cherry, which tolerates both heat and cold.
