Grandiflora
Family
Solanaceae
Botanical Name
CESTRUM 'Newellii'
Plant Common Name
Jessamine, Newell's Red Jessamine
General Description
Thought to be a hybrid between Cestrum fasciculatum and Cestrum elegans, this large tender evergreen shrub bears spectacular clusters of dazzling red blooms all along its arching branches. The tubular flowers continue in abundance throughout most of summer and fall, attracting hummingbirds. Flowering may continue through winter in mild climates. Red-purple berries follow the flowers. The downy, narrowly oval leaves are medium to dark green. Plant this showy shrub in any well-drained soil, keeping it well watered until established. It likes ample sun but needs some shade in hot climates. It will tolerate a few degrees of frost, growing back quickly if damaged. Tip-prune for compactness; remove older stems in winter to make room for vigorous new growth. Use it in mixed borders, hummingbird gardens, and large containers.
