Japanese Flowering Quince, Maule's Flowering Quince, Super Red™ Flowering Quince
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
This is a selection of Japanese flowering quince, a deciduous shrub native to Japan. Tall-growing, ‘Moned’ blooms profusely in spring with clusters of bright-red flowers both before and after the leaves come out. Small, fragrant, greenish-yellow, apple-shaped fruits with a red blush ripen in the fall and can be used for preserves and jellies.
Grow ‘Moned’ (also known as Super Red) in full sun or partial shade, and moist, well-drained soil for best growth and bloom. However, it is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including mildly alkaline soils. Its broad-spreading form and thorny branches make it useful for hedges, but it can be grown as a specimen placed where its spring bloom will be visible.
