‘Rubra’ Japanese flowering quince is a cultivar of the popular shrub that originated in Japan. This low-growing variety blooms profusely in the spring with clusters of crimson flowers both before and after the leaves come out. Small, fragrant, greenish yellow, apple-shaped fruits with a red blush ripen in the fall and can be used for preserves and jellies. Its broad-spreading form and thorny branches make ‘Rubra’ Japanese flowering quince useful for hedges. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including mildly alkaline soils, and it flowers best in full sun, although it can also be grown in part shade.
