Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CHAMAECYPARIS obtusa 'Gracilis'

Plant Common Name

Graceful Hinoki Falsecypress, Hinoki Falsecypress

General Description

A sacred tree in its native Japan, Hinoki falsecypress is an evergreen conifer with flattened sprays of dark green scale-like leaves that have conspicuous white lines on their undersides. The most commonly cultivated form of Hinoki falsecypress, ‘Gracilis’ grows slowly into a small dense conical tree. Its dark green leaves are arranged in tight fans which droop at the branch tips. The small globular female cones are green maturing to reddish brown. This cultivar is sometimes confused with 'Nana Gracilis', which is a smaller, slower growing plant.

Hinoki falsecypress prefers some shade; full sun is tolerated in cool relatively moist locations. The soil should have humus, good drainage, and some acidity. This tree responds poorly to severe pruning. Use it in the mixed border, as an individual specimen, or for hedging or screening.
