Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CHAMAECYPARIS obtusa 'Nana Lutea'

Plant Common Name

Hinoki Falsecypress

General Description

A sacred tree in its native Japan, Hinoki falsecypress is an evergreen conifer with flattened sprays of dark green scale-like leaves that have prominent white bands on their undersides. The cultivar 'Nana Lutea' grows slowly into a dense broadly conical shrub with cupped, angled sprays of golden yellow foliage. The yellow coloration decreases with increasing shade. The small globular female cones are green maturing to reddish brown.

This cultivar prefers partial shade, being prone to leaf scorch in full sun. The soil should have humus, good drainage, and some acidity. Use this dwarf conifer in the mixed border, as an individual specimen, or in combination with other small shrubs such as heaths and heathers.
