Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CHAMAECYPARIS pisifera 'Filifera Aurea Nana'

Plant Common Name

Dwarf Golden Threadleaf Falsecypress, Japanese Falsecypress, Sawara Falsecypress

General Description

Represented in gardens primarily by three large groups of cultivars, Sawara falsecypress is a hardy evergreen conifer native to Japan. Its clasping scale-like leaves, cascading tassel-like branchlets, and self-descriptive moniker mark 'Filifera Aurea Nana' as a member of the Filifera Group. It grows slowly into a low lacy golden-yellow mound. The spherical pea-sized fruits are rarely if ever produced.

This cultivar thrives in partial shade and moist, slightly acid, organic-rich, well-drained soil. Its foliage may scorch in full sun. It prefers cool humid environments and should be protected from harsh drying winds. Use this colorful and textural shrub in the mixed border or foundation planting, as an individual specimen, or in combination with other small shrubs such as heaths and heathers.
