Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CHAMAECYPARIS pisifera 'Filifera Aurea'

Plant Common Name

Golden Threadleaf Japanese Falsecypress, Japanese Falsecypress

General Description

Represented in gardens primarily by three large groups of cultivars, Sawara falsecypress is a hardy evergreen conifer native to Japan. Its clasping scale-like leaves, cascading tassel-like branchlets, and self-descriptive moniker mark 'Filifera Aurea' as a member of the Filifera Group. Introduced to Western gardens in the late 19th Century, this relatively slow growing, bright golden-yellow cultivar eventually forms a large pyramidal shrub or small tree. The spherical pea-sized cones are green maturing to brown. Mature specimens have handsome peeling orange-brown bark.

This cultivar thrives in partial shade and moist, slightly acid, organic-rich, well-drained soil. Its foliage may scorch in full sun. It prefers cool humid environments and should be protected from harsh drying winds. Use this colorful and textural plant in the shrub border, as an individual specimen, or for screening.
