James H. Schutte

Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CHAMAECYPARIS pisifera 'Lemon Thread'

Plant Common Name

Japanese Falsecypress, Lemon Thread Falsecypress, Sawara Falsecypress

General Description

Represented in gardens primarily by three large groups of cultivars, Sawara falsecypress is a hardy evergreen conifer native to Japan. The cascading, chartreuse-yellow, tassel-like branchlets of 'Lemon Thread' give the impression of a Filifera Group cultivar, yet this recent introduction is a member of the Squarrosa Group. It grows slowly to form a lacy, billowing, medium-sized, pyramidal shrub. The spherical pea-sized brown cones appear only on mature specimens.

This cultivar thrives in partial shade and moist, slightly acid, organic-rich, well-drained soil. Its foliage may scorch in full sun. It prefers cool humid environments and should be protected from harsh drying winds. Use this colorful and textural shrub in the rock garden or foundation planting, as a feature or accent plant, in a container, or in combination with small shrubs such as heaths and heathers.
