General Description
A slow-growing cultivar of Atlantic white cedar, ‘Andelyensis’ has fine-textured medium bright green needles that blush purple during winter, especially on boughs exposed to full sun. It is a tidy but wide-pyramidal small tree of broad soil adaptability, a trait of its parent, native to the coastal plains of the eastern United States from Maine to Florida and Mississippi. An evergreen conifer, ‘Andelyensis’ has reddish, gray-brown bark well hidden by the dense, prickly tufts of needles that have white bands on the undersides. Both male and female cones appear in profusion in late spring, and are small and rounded. The female cones become less rounded and more scaly as they ripen from dark purple to light sienna-brown.
Grow any Atlantic whitecedar in moist, well-drained to soggy soils in full sunlight. This cultivar resents root disturbance during transplanting any may take several years to reestablish. It is useful as a dense accent tree, or grouped as a windbreak or screen on the edge of a property.
