Family

Botanical Name

CHASMANTHIUM latifolium

Plant Common Name

Indian Woodoats, Northern Sea Oats

General Description

Northern sea oats is an upright growing ornamental grass native to the eastern United States and northern Mexico. Its gracefully, arching stems bear spikes in the late summer to early autumn that resemble flattened oat seedheads. The bamboo-like leaves turn a golden-tan in the winter and the seedheads remain on throughout most of the winter adding to the garden interest.

Plant northern sea oats in full sun in any fertile soil that is well-drained. It performs better with moist soil, but can tolerate drier sites. Since seedheads become more attractive as they age and darken by fall, plant it among shrubs and perennials that either turn color or flower then. It also looks terrific around the billowy needled lower branches of pines or clumps of dwarf conifers. In many areas the seeds will germinate across the garden, making it important to pull out these volunteer seedlings to reduce its potential invasiveness.
