General Description

Coarse looking, but glossy green with a crepe paper texture, the leaves of frangipani vine take a secondary role once the amazingly fragratn white flowers appear in spring and summer. A heavy, large, broadleaf evergreen vine, it is native from India southward to Malaysia.

New leaves emerge a light green with a hint of bronze and soon become large oval to heart-shaped leaves of glossy green. The blades have a rippled vein texture. In midspring through the summer, small clusters of baseball-sized, five-petaled white flowers appear from small stems along the climbing branches. The flower is trumpet-like with a flat ray of lightly twisted petals that surround a yellow throat. Normally evergreen, if temperatures close to freezing approach it may shed many leaves.

Grow the magnificent frangipani vine in full to partial sun in a moist, fertile, well-draining loamy sand that is acidic. Drought and alkaline soil is detrimental. In the wild this vine will readily climb tall rainforest trees, but in a garden setting it is smaller but still requires a strong, sturdy structure upon with to ramble and climb. Use it as a showpiece vine on a pergola or arbor or on a stone wall in the tropical landscape. Since it flowers in summer it is particularly lovely to fragrance the air around patios and swimming pools where social gatherings are common. When in bloom, avoid getting the flowers wet with irrigation spray as it will cause premature browning of the blossoms in sunlight.
