CHRYSACTINIA mexicana

James H. Schutte

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

CHRYSACTINIA mexicana

Plant Common Name

Damianita

General Description

A cheerful mound of bright yellow flowers in spring and summer, damianita is a heat and drought-tolerant wonder native from northern Mexico to western Texas and southern New Mexico in the United States. The small, needle-like leaves are dark green, giving this evergreen shrub an attractive look even when not in bloom. They are aromatic if crushed. Damianita blooms most heavily from mid-spring to late summer, but flowers in flushes year round when grown in full sun and frost-free regions. Butterflies visit the bright yellow daisies, and so do pollen-hunting bees.

Grow damianita in full to partial sun in a well-drained rocky or gritty soil that is not very fertile. Soils should never be wet, but especially so in the winter. Light pruning is recommended only in early spring to promote a denser plant. Damianita makes a fantastic mounding groundcover for hillsides and dry foundation beds. Its tolerance of reflective heat suits it for parking lot medians and concrete planters in sunny urban landscapes.
