CHRYSANTHEMUM 'Clara Curtis'

Image of Chrysanthemum 'Clara Curtis'

James Burghardt

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

CHRYSANTHEMUM 'Clara Curtis'

Plant Common Name

Hardy Chrysanthemum

General Description

This spreading perennial chrysanthemum produces delicate single pale pink daisies with yellow centers. It is a late season mum that begins flowering in mid to late fall. Though clump-forming, ‘Clara Curtis’ spreads fast, so only plant it where there is plenty of space. Otherwise it will take over! When not in bloom, plants offer dark green deeply lobed foliage that is pungently aromatic when crushed. This cultivar is sometimes listed as 'Country Girl'.

Grow this hardy perennial in full sun and well-draining garden loam. 'Clara Curtis' will adopt a neater habit and flower more heavily if pinched back in early summer. Do not pinch any later than the summer solstice, otherwise it won’t have time to initiate floral buds for fall.

While in bloom this mum is exceptionally lovely. It pairs well with New York aster, ornamental grasses and pink and white Salvia leucantha. Its pastel flowers add a warm touch to the autumn landscape and can be cut for arrangements.
