CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium (BIANCA™ SERIES)

Image of Chrysanthemum x morifolium (BIANCA™ SERIES)

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium( BIANCA™ SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Pompon Chrysanthemum

General Description

The "decorative" chrysanthemums in the Bianca™ Series bear masses of small, yellow or white pompons in early fall on dense, mounded, 10- to 14-inch (25 to 35 cm) plants. Cultivars in this series were developed by Mark A. Smith of Fort Myers, Florida, and introduced by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio.

The showy double blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of decorative chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Decorative mums such as those in the Bianca™ Series are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.

Like most decorative mums, Bianca™ Series cultivars thrive in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically used as seasonal annuals, they can function as garden perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch plants back in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
