CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Emma'
Decorative Chrysanthemum
In autumn this proven mum displays a tremendous number of decorative flowers of rusty bronze. Like other cushion mums, it is a heavy-flowering selection that adopts a uniform mounded habit.
In spring, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial puts forth dense stems lined with medium green, fragrant, lobed leaves. In late spring to early summer it should be pinched back to encourage a more uniform shape and to increase the density of flower buds for fall. It begins flowering in early to mid-fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Its many blooms are flattened, fully double, uniformly round and cover the plants so densely it is difficult to see the foliage below.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, most mums like this are grown as annuals but will survive in regions with milder winters or in protected locations. Plants are more reliably hardy if you wait to cut their spent branches back in mid-spring. Spring is also the best time to divide mums, if necessary.
This is an easy mum to design with. It looks best planted in masses with ornamental grasses and tall stonecrops and is ideal for elegant fall containers.
