Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Empire Blizzard'( BLIZZARD, BLIZZARD SERIES) PP12205
Garden Chrysanthemum, Single Chrysanthemum
This hardy garden chrysanthemum produces masses of white, yellow-eyed, daisy-like blossoms on densely branched, rounded, 12- to 18-inch (30 to 45 cm) plants. The 2.5-inch-wide (6 cm), single to semi-double blooms open in early autumn, toward the end of the fall "mum" season. Cultivars in the Blizzard Series are marketed by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio, and are available only as vegetatively propagated plants. This cultivar was developed by Janet S. Fuess of Empire Mums, New York Mills, New York.
The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Garden mums are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most garden mums, Blizzard Series cultivars thrive in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, most garden mums can be used as border perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a tidier habit and heavier fall flowering.
