Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Garnet King'
The enormous long-stemmed flowers of 'Garnet King' are specialty mums best-suited for conservatory displays and the cut flower industry, though home gardeners with cutting gardens may try their hand at growing them. The upright mum bears very large, fully double flowers with reflexed petals of deepest red. They appear on strong stems against dusty dark green foliage.
In spring, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial puts forth dense stems lined with fragrant lobed leaves. It begins flowering in early to mid-fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Plants should be staked to keep the heavy blooms from flopping when in bloom. Its large blooms have fluffy reflexed petals of rich red.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, most mums like this are grown as annuals but will survive in regions with milder winters or in protected locations. Plants are more reliably hardy if you wait to cut their spent branches back in mid-spring. The spectacular 'Garnet King' is a lovely specialty mum best reserved for cutting gardens or well-tended fall borders.
