Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Golden Spotlight'
Decorative Chrysanthemum, Golden Spotlight Chrysanthemum
The fully double blooms of ‘Golden Spotlight’ are sunny yellow with a rusty orange center. Its habit is more upright than other mums but still maintains a nice cushion form.
In spring, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial puts forth dense stems lined with medium green, fragrant, lobed leaves. In late spring to early summer it should be pinched back to encourage a more uniform shape and to increase the density of flower buds for fall. It begins flowering in mid to late fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Its many fragrant flowers are uniform and cover the plants so densely when in bloom it is difficult to see the foliage below.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, most mums are grown as annuals to include ‘Golden Spotlight’, though it will survive in regions with modestly cold winters.
It looks brilliant planted in masses and is a great companion to orange-tinted sedges and purple asters. The rich golden flowers are also ideal for harvest-themed container plantings. This is also a great choice for cutting due to its strong stems and upright habit.
