CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium( GRETCHEN SERIES)
Garden Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums in the Gretchen Series bear masses of double yellow, orange, or red blossoms on compact, bushy, 8- to 14-inch (20 to 35 cm) plants. These early-season mums open their 1.5- to 2-inch-wide (3.5 to 5 cm) blooms in late summer and early fall. Cultivars in this series were introduced by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio, and are available only as vegetatively propagated plants.
The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Garden mums are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most garden mums, Gretchen Series cultivars thrive in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, these garden mums can be used as border perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
