Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'May Shoesmith'

Plant Common Name

Greenhouse Chrysanthemum, Regular Incurve Chrysanthemum

General Description

Grown for cutting and for greenhouse displays, 'May Shoesmith' produces large, rounded, double white blossoms with incurved petals. The 5- to 6-inch-wide (12.5 to 15 cm), many-petaled blooms appear in autumn under "natural" conditions, but greenhouse-grown specimens can be brought into flower at other seasons, with plants blooming 2 to 3 months after 3 weeks of "long nights" (13.5 hours or more). This vegetatively propagated chrysanthemum was developed in the late 1960s by Leonard H. Shoesmith of Woking, England. It is typically sold as a pot plant or a cut flower.

Chrysanthemum × morifolium is an old-time favorite for fall gardens and for greenhouse and cut-flower displays. This herbaceous perennial originated in eastern Asia, where it has long been cultivated for its showy blooms and fragrant, deeply lobed foliage. Hundreds of mum varieties are grown today.

Like most mums,'May Shoesmith' thrives in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Disbudded plants produce extra-large blooms.
