Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Red Temptress'
Red Temptress Chrysanthemum, Semi-Double Chrysanthemum
In the first days of fall, ‘Red Temptress’ offers semi-double blooms with fluted coral-red petals and yellow centers. It is a Belgium hardy mum, so it is more reliably hardy than most cultivars, and blends beautifully with other brightly colored bedding plants for fall.
In spring, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial develops dense stems lined with medium green, fragrant lobed leaves. It begins flowering in early fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Small, single daisies with rounded, or “spooned” petal tips, cover it so densely it’s hard to see the foliage below. The flowers are visited by butterflies as the insects prepare to migrate, lay eggs or find shelter for winter.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, most mums are grown as annuals to include ‘Red Temptress.’ Still, this cultivar is hardier than most. Plants are more reliably hardy if you wait to cut their spent branches back in mid-spring. Spring is also the best time to divide them, if necessary.
This cultivar looks best planted in masses and pairs well with brightly colored fall bedding plants. Container specimens are especially becoming for table arrangements or harvest-themed displays.
