CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Redwing'
Redwing Chrysanthemum, Spoon Chrysanthemum
The large, yellow-eyed blooms of this "spoon" chrysanthemum have numerous furled, white petals with red-purple, spoon-shaped tips. Bloom is in autumn under "natural" conditions, but greenhouse-grown plants can be forced into flower at other seasons. Like most "spoon" mums, this cultivar is typically grown as a seasonal container plant. It is propagated from cuttings and divisions.
C. × morifolium originated in eastern Asia, where this herbaceous perennial has been cultivated and bred for many centuries. Its many cultivars are grown for their showy blooms, which are borne above clumps of fragrant, deeply lobed leaves.
Like most decorative mums, 'Redwing' thrives in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Pinch back developing flowering stems to encourage a tidier habit and heavier flowering.
