CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Empire Rhapsody' PP09725
Better known as "Rhapsody", this double-flowered "decorative" chrysanthemum bears masses of 2-inch-wide (5 cm), red-violet blooms on dense, mounded, 2-foot (60 cm) plants. It flowers from late summer to early fall. This cultivar was selected by Janet S. Fuess of Empire Mums, New York Mills, New York.
The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are familiar to most modern gardeners. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. "Decorative" mums such as 'Empire Rhapsody' are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most garden mums, 'Empire Rhapsody' thrives in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically used as a seasonal annual, it can be employed as a hardy perennial in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch plants back in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
