CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium( STEPHANIE SERIES)
Stephanie Series chrysanthemums produce masses of white or yellow, semi-double blossoms on densely branched, dome-shaped, 10- to 18-inch (25 to 45 cm) plants. The 2- to 2.5-inch-wide (5 to 6 cm), yellow-eyed blooms open in late summer, early in the fall "mum" season. Stephanie Series cultivars were introduced by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio, and are available only as vegetatively propagated plants.
C. × morifolium originated in eastern Asia, where this herbaceous perennial has been cultivated and bred for many centuries. Its many cultivars are grown for their showy blooms, which are borne above clumps of fragrant, deeply lobed leaves.
Like most mums, those in the Stephanie Series thrive in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, they can be used as garden perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back developing flowering stems to encourage a tidier habit and heavier flowering.
