CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Venus' PP14378
Single Chrysanthemum, Venus Chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum 'Venus' produces masses of double purple blossoms on densely branched, dome-shaped, 10- to 16-inch (25 to 40 cm) plants. The 2-inch-wide (5 cm), many-petaled blooms open in late summer, very early in the fall "mum" season. Two other chrysanthemum cultivars also bear this name: the hardy, pink, single-flowered 'Venus', and the yellow, anemone-flowered C. × morifolium 'Venus' (not patented).
The showy blooms and fragrant, lobed leaves of decorative chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. They are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most decorative mums, 'Venus' thrives in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, most decorative mums can be used as border perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a tidier habit and heavier fall flowering.
