CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Yellow Padre'
Decorative Chrysanthemum, Yellow Padre Chrysanthemum
In mid-fall this decorative chrysanthemum produces lots of fully double, pure yellow daisies on upright, medium-sized, mounded plants.
'Yellow Padre' has dense, brittle stems that are lined with deep green, fragrant lobed leaves which remain attractive all season. It begins flowering in the middle of fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Its fully double flowers are uniform and densely cover the mounded plant. The flowers are visited by butterflies as the insects prepare to migrate, lay eggs or find shelter for winter.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, most mums like this are grown as annuals. Plants are more reliably hardy if you wait to cut their spent branches back in mid-spring. Spring is also the best time to divide them, if necessary. Cushion mums are often pinched back by ¼ in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier flowering.
This colorful mum looks best when planted in groups and is especially welcoming in festive container plantings and tabletop displays with decorative winter squash. Pair it with ornamental grasses, asters and silvery blue ornamental kales.
