Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Yoalisha'(ALISHA) PP18995
The beautiful purplish magenta daisies of Alisha chrysanthemum bring pizazz to the fall garden. This Yoder Brothers introduction adopts a perfect compact, spreading, cushion habit and naturally begins to bloom in the middle of the fall season. It was bred by Mark A. Smith of Fort Myers, Florida.
In spring, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial develops dense stems lined with medium green, fragrant lobed leaves. It begins flowering in mid-fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Its showy flowers are uniform and densely cover the mounded plant. They are visited by butterflies as the insects prepare to migrate, lay eggs or find shelter for winter.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, mums like Alisha are grown as annuals. Plants are more reliably hardy if you wait to cut their spent branches back in mid-spring. Spring is also the best time to divide them, if necessary. Cushion mums are often pinched back by ¼ in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier flowering.
For an exquisite autumnal garden show, plant this mum among colorful ornamental kales, variegated Yucca and blue asters. It is also ideal for festive container arrangements, indoors or out.
