Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Yobonnie'(BONNIE) PP18886
Bonnie Chrysanthemum, Single Chrysanthemum
Rich red daisies with golden centers cover this impressive mum in early fall. Each bloom has long petals that lend pretty fall appeal. This Yoder Brothers introduction adopts a perfect compact, spreading, cushion habit and was bred by Mark A. Smith of Fort Myers, Florida.
In spring, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial has dense, branched stems lined with medium green, fragrant lobed leaves. It begins flowering in early fall and continues for several weeks afterward. Its showy flowers are uniform and densely cover the mounded plant. They are visited by butterflies as the insects prepare to migrate, lay eggs or find shelter for winter.
Chrysanthemums prefer full sun and fertile garden loam with good drainage. Though technically perennial, mums like Bonnie are grown as annuals. Plants are more reliably hardy if you wait to cut their spent branches back in mid-spring. Spring is also the best time to divide them, if necessary. Cushion mums are often pinched back in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
The velvety color of this mum pairs well with ornamental grasses, orange pansies and blue-green yucca. It looks best when planted in group and adds a harvest touch to fall container plantings and tabletop displays.
