CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Yocarmella'(CARMELLA™ RED) PP15353
The late-blooming garden chrysanthemum Carmella™ Red bears masses of double, russet-red blooms on dense, mounded, 8- to 12-inch (20 to 30 cm) plants. The 1.5-inch-wide (3.5 cm) blooms appear in mid-autumn, toward the end of the "mum" season. This cultivar was developed by Mark A. Smith of Fort Myers, Florida, and introduced in 2003 by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio.
The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Garden mums are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most garden mums, Carmella™ Red thrives in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as a seasonal annual, this garden mum can be used as a perennial in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
