CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Empire Courtney'(COURTNEY) PP13014
Semi-double Chrysanthemum
The garden chrysanthemum 'Empire Courtney' produces masses of lilac-pink, yellow-eyed "daisies" on densely branched, 12- to 18-inch (30 to 45 cm) plants. The 2-inch-wide (5 to 5.5 cm) blooms open in early fall, midway in the "mum" season. This cultivar was developed by Janet S. Fuess of Empire Mums, New York Mills, New York, and marketed (as Courtney) by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio. It is available only as vegetatively propagated plants.
The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Garden mums are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most garden mums, 'Empire Courtney' thrives in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, most garden mums can be used as border perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
