CHRYSANTHEMUM x morifolium 'Yomelissa'( MELISSA SERIES) PP12223
The original member of the Melissa Series of double chrysanthemums, 'Yomelissa' produces masses of purple blossoms on densely branched, 10- to 14-inch (25 to 35 cm) plants. The 2-inch-wide (5 cm), many-petaled blooms of this mid- to late-season mum appear from early- to mid-fall. Cultivars in the Melissa Series were introduced by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio, and are available only as vegetatively propagated plants.
The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Garden mums are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display.
Like most garden mums, Melissa Series cultivars thrive in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, these garden mums can be used as border perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a neater habit and heavier fall flowering.
