CHRYSOGONUM virginianum 'Allen Bush'

Image of Chrysogonum virginianum 'Allen Bush'

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

CHRYSOGONUM virginianum 'Allen Bush'

Plant Common Name

Allen Bush Green and Gold, Golden Star, Green and Gold

General Description

Bring golden stars to the dappled shade beneath large trees with this perfectly adapted woodland perennial, ‘Allen Bush’ green and gold, a selection of a species native to the woodlands of the southeastern states of the U.S. from Pennsylvania to Florida and west to Louisiana. This mounding but ground-hugging plant thrives in the humus rich, acidic soils of the forest floor, where it contributes a leafy carpet and continuous flowering. In mid-spring the plant bursts into bright yellow daisies that pop out amid the light emerald green leaves. Bloom continues intermittently until the first hard frost.

Use 'Allen Bush' as a clumping groundcover to green up the barren ground beneath trees. Where the shade is deep, it blooms only sparsely. In filtered sunlight it blooms at its best. It is a good, spreading groundcover in any sheltered spot, and makes an exceptional edging for pathways, steps on sloping ground, or under border shrubs.
