General Description

Here's a succulent tropical vine that has more interesting stems than leaves. Winged treebine hails from tropical Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and eastern India. Odd-looking and generally leafless, its primary feature are thick, jointed, four-angled green stems.

The leaves, which aren't all that frequent, occur opposite tendrils at nodes on the winged stems. Each leaf is oval or three-lobed with coarse teeth and a fleshy texture. In summer, tiny clusters of green-yellow flowers appear, followed by oval, reddish black fruits.

Grow winged treebine outdoors only where temperatures never approach freezing. A fast-draining soil in a full sun exposure ensures a healthy plant. In summer's heat, water freely for lushest growth but reduce watering sharply across the winter months.

Winged treebine informally climbs or clambers on a trellis or fence. It sprawls informally over a rocky hillside or retaining wall much like a curtain-like groundcover. It also adapts well to a sturdy, strong-wired hanging basket.
