Family

Cistaceae

Botanical Name

CISTUS x aguilarii 'Maculatus'

Plant Common Name

Crimson-Spot Rockrose, Rockrose

General Description

Rockrose is a hardy, evergreen shrub. It is a natural hybrid between Cistus ladanifer and Cistus populifolius, both native to the Mediterranean region. Shiny, sticky leaves are lance-shaped, opposite on the stem and have smooth to wavy margins. The lovely, papery, abundant, summer flowers are solitary and open for one day. The cultivar ‘Maculatus’ has flowers which are roundish, flat, white with a red to maroon spot at the base or each petal. The flowers have a center of bright gold stamens and are reminiscent of wild roses. The stems and foliage have a pleasant, resinous fragrance. The fruit is a capsule and the seeds within are viable. Overall, rockroses produce nicely rounded plants that may be short-lived.

Rockroses prefer warm, dry, mild climates and are frost sensitive. They are known for growing in poor, alkaline soils, thought average, well-drained soils are preferred. Full sun is best for good growth. They are drought tolerant once established, salt tolerant and heat tolerant. Prune by tip pruning or heading back to encourage bushier growth. Propagate by direct seeding and leave in place, rockroses do not transplant well. Rockroses are beautiful in rock gardens, in borders and along walls.
