CITRUS reticulata 'Dancy'

Family

Rutaceae

Botanical Name

CITRUS reticulata 'Dancy'

Plant Common Name

Dancy Tangerine, Tangerine

General Description

Dancy tangerine is a small evergreen citrus tree known for prolific bearing of sweet and seeded fruits in late autumn. It is also occasionally called the Christmas tangerine because of its historical abundance in markets in December in the United States. Native to southeastern Asia, cultivar 'Dancy' is believed to have it's origins in China and typically has thornless branches, unlike other tangerine/mandarin trees. It produces fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by round to oval, sweet, easy-to-peel red-orange fruits. Although considered a reliable and abundant fruit producer, 'Dancy' will often alternate years of heavy and lighter crops of fruit.

Dancy mandarin orange likes full sun, well drained soil, and hot summers. It is more heat-loving and drought tolerant than a sweet orange tree. Thinning out the number of developing fruit per branch helps yield fewer yet larger sized fruits. Plant 'Dancy' in the garden for flowers, fragrance, fruit and ornament, or use it in patio containers.
