General Description
This evergreen woody vine bears clusters of delicate, fragrant, creamy-white flowers in spring. The slightly cupped, medium-sized blooms of this Chinese native have four to seven starry segments and prominent yellow anthers. The handsome, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves are divided into three leaflets and have clasping stems which allow this climber to cling to structures. Notable cultivars include 'Apple Blossom', with pink-tinged flowers, and 'Snowdrift', with pure white, highly fragrant blooms.
Provide Armand’s clematis with average to fertile, well drained soil. It thrives in full sun where summers are cool, but prefers partial shade in hotter climes. Like other clematis, it likes "cool feet," with its base in the shade and roots in cool, moist soil. Prune soon after flowering as its flowers come from the previous year’s growth. This vine is an excellent choice for covering walls or other structures.
