Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
Asao Clematis, Clematis, Early Large-flowered Clematis
Asao clematis is a deciduous woody vine that bears many flowers early in the season. From late spring to early summer, large single flowers of soft rosy pink appear along twining stems covered with medium green leaves. Seed heads follow that are spider-like and ornamental.
This clematis grows best in sites with partial sun and fertile, well drained soil rich in organic matter. In hot summer regions, keep the soil shaded with mulch. Flower buds develop from the previous year's growth, so extensive pruning should be done after the compact plant blooms. If left unpruned, plants will sporadically flower again in fall. As with most clematis, this selection adds a vertical element to the garden and looks best when trained on a fence, trellis or pergola.
