Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

CLEMATIS 'Broughton Star'

Plant Common Name

Broughton Star Clematis, Clematis, Montana Clematis

General Description

This beautiful Clematis montana hybrid offers many smaller-sized, semi-double dusty pink flowers early in the season. This vine is not as vigorous or as large as the species, but it still reaches a substantial size when mature.

Hybrid clematis is a hardy deciduous woody vine that climbs by twining stems. The vines are lined with bronze-hued green compound leaves, which may be semi-evergreen in milder climates. The smaller flowers appear in spring and are followed by fluffy clusters of silvery seeds.

Plant this vine in sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It grows and flowers best if its roots remain cool under a vegetative layer or thick mulch. As with most clematis, this selection adds a vertical element to the garden and looks best when trained on a fence, trellis or pergola.

This is a Group 1 clematis, which means it bears flowers on the previous year’s growth and should be pruned after flowering.
