CLEMATIS 'Candida'

Image of Clematis 'Candida'

James Burghardt

Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

CLEMATIS 'Candida'

Plant Common Name

Candida Clematis, Clematis, Early Large-flowered Clematis

General Description

Candida clematis is a vigorous growing deciduous vine with large white flowers set off by buttery-white stamens and streaks in the center of each bloom. The individual blossom of this Chinese hybrid can reach the size of a widely opened human hand. 'Candida' blooms from from spring until autumn on both old and new growth.

Clematis likes cool, shaded fertile soil but the growing vines should get at least six hours of sun per day. It grows best in a well-drained soil with a layer of mulch over the roots. Once established, it is quite long-lived and should be pruned lightly in early spring to areas with healthy bud pairs on each stem. The immense flowers and the silvery-gray dried seedheads are often used in floral arrangements.
