CLEMATIS 'Elizabeth'
Clematis, Elizabeth Clematis, Montana Clematis
Sometimes listed as a cultivar of Clematis montana, the hybrid ' Elizabeth’ is a vigorous climber that offers many smaller-sized rich pink flowers early in the season. These are four to five-petaled and borne in profusion.
Hybrid clematis is a hardy deciduous woody vine that climbs by twining stems. The vines are lined with delicate green compound leaves that appear in spring. These may be semi-evergreen in milder climates. The smaller flowers appear from spring to summer and are followed by fluffy clusters of silvery seeds.
Plant this vine in sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It grows and flowers best if its roots remain cool under a vegetative layer or thick mulch. As with most clematis, this selection adds a vertical element to the garden and looks best when trained on a fence, trellis or pergola.
This is a Group 1 clematis, which means it bears flowers on the previous year’s growth and should be pruned after flowering.
