Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

CLEMATIS montana var. rubens 'Superba'

Plant Common Name

Virgin's Bower

General Description

This nearly carefree vine offers strongly-colored pink flowers, fragrance and vigorous growth. It is descended from a white flowered species, Clematis montananative to the Himalayan Mountains of China. Deciduous and woody, it is long-lived and capable of reaching a large size. The stems bear dark green three-part leaves that when new are a distinctive burgundy. This vine climbs by twining stems that wrap best around small diameter twigs. It was often trained into dead trees in old English gardens.

This beautiful bloomer produces pink four-petal flowers more richly colored than its close relatives. These are borne alone or in small groups. Each blossom is the size of a human palm with distinctive creamy yellow anthers at the center. The flowers are noted for a vanilla-like fragrance. The vine blooms heavily over a period of about four weeks from late spring into early summer, making a large area of color.

This is a Group I clematis, which means its flower buds form one year and open the next. It must be pruned pruned immediately after flowering so the new flower buds have time to form. Pruning at any other time can jeopardize next year’s bloom.

This species grows best on sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It prefers neutral to alkaline conditions because acidic soils induce nutrient deficiencies. It grows and flowers best when its roots remain cool under a groundcover or thick mulch. Use this vine in a location where you can exploit its full size without crowding. Make it a seasonal focal point while in bloom, then take advantage of the foliage to cover an arbor, fence or trellis. It is particularly useful at gateways where you'll enjoy the fragrance when you enter.
