Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

CLEMATIS montana var. wilsonii

Plant Common Name

Wilson's Virgin's Bower

General Description

This beautiful bloomer produces single white flowers alone or in small groups. Each flowers is composed of four slightly twisted sepals (petal-like modified leaves) with a creamy white bunch of anthers at the center. Each is about the size of a small human palm and redolent with a vanilla-like scent. This variety blooms two to three weeks later than most other Clematis montana varieties, and its four weeks of color extend later into the summer. It falls into pruning Group I, clematises that bear blossoms on the previous year’s growth. Therefore it should be pruned immediately after flowering to ensure abundant bloom the next year.

This species grows best in sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It prefers neutral to alkaline conditions. More acid soils induce nutrient deficiencies. It grows and flowers best if the roots remain cool under a groundcover or thick mulch. Use this vine in a location where you can exploit its full size without crowding. Make it a seasonal focal point while in bloom, then take advantage of the foliage to cover an arbor, fence or trellis. Exploit the fragrance at gateways and entries for you and your guests to enjoy when they pass through.
