Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

CLEMATIS patens 'Manshuu Ki'

Plant Common Name

Chinese Clematis, Wada's Primrose Clematis

General Description

Clematis ‘Manshuu Ki’ displays many large, fragrant, pale primrose flowers in late spring to early summer. It is a selection of a deciduous perennial vine native to eastern China, Korea and Japan which typically inhabits the edges of woodlands. This cultivar is sometimes sold under the name ‘Wada’s Primrose’.

The rich green leaves of this species are composed of three smaller, teardrop-shaped leaflets, and are borne sparsely on slender, climbing stems that seldom grow taller than head-height. Its large, creamy blossoms appear early in the clematis season, and feature eight to ten petal-like sepals surrounding a central tuft of yellow stamens. The flowers emit a delicious fragrance reminiscent of oranges. They are pollinated by small insects, and give way to decorative, silvery seedheads, somewhat resembling small fireworks.

Grow this clematis in full sun to partial shade and moist, fertile, neutral to alkaline soil. Preferring cool roots, it benefits from a layer of mulch in summer, and is best planted where its root zone is shaded by the foliage of other perennials. Additional shade may be required where summers are hot to prevent scorching of foliage. 'Manshuu Ki' may be grown as a trellised specimen, in containers, or trained along a low fence. Be sure to plant it where its scented blossoms can be enjoyed up close.

This is a group 2 clematis, which means that it flowers on sideshoots emerging from the previous year's growth. The stems may be lightly pruned in early spring to just above a pair of strong buds.
