CLEMATIS 'Red Cardinal'

Mary S. Thomas

Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

CLEMATIS 'Red Cardinal' ('('Rouge Cardinal')')

Plant Common Name

Clematis, Late Large-flowered Clematis, Red Cardinal Clematis, Rouge Cardinal Clematis

General Description

The large, single, rosy crimson blooms of ‘Red Cardinal’ are punctuated by a central star of creamy beige stamens. This tall, vigorous cultivar was bred by A. Girault in 1968 in Orleans, France.

Hybrid clematis is a hardy deciduous woody vine that climbs by twining stems. The vines are lined with green compound leaves that appear in spring. The large flowers appear from summer to fall and are followed by fluffy clusters of silvery seeds.

Clematis grows best in sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It grows and flowers best if its roots remain cool under a vegetative layer or thick mulch. If left unpruned, plants will sporadically flower again in fall. As with most clematis, this selection adds a vertical element to the garden and looks best when trained on a fence, trellis or pergola.

This is a Group 3 clematis, which means it bears flowers on the current year’s growth and can be hard pruned.
