Botanical Name

CLEMATIS serratifolia 'Kugotia'(GOLDEN TIARA®) PP10952

Plant Common Name

Golden Tiara Korean Clematis, Golden Tiara® Clematis

General Description

An award-winner in both North America and Europe, clematis ‘Kugotia’ (usually sold under the name Golden Tiara®) displays multitudes of golden yellow blooms in summer. It is a selection of a species native to gravelly soils and slopes of far eastern Siberia, northern Japan and Korea, and is notable for its vigor and heavy-flowering habit.

The rich green leaves of this woody vine are composed of three smaller, lance-shaped leaflets with broadly toothed edges. Beginning in midsummer, many starry, nodding, yellow flowers appear on slender stems above the foliage. Each has four petal-like sepals which surround a central cluster of dark purple-black stamens. The flowers gradually turn outwards with age, making them more accessible to small pollinating insects. They are followed by decorative, silvery seedheads that somewhat resemble small fireworks.

Plant this beauty in full sun to part shade and moist, fertile, neutral to alkaline soil. Preferring cool roots, it benefits from a layer of summer mulch, and should be planted where its root zone is shaded by the foliage of other perennials. ‘Kugotia’ is gorgeous when trained on a trellis, fence or arbor. Make sure to plant it where its delicate flowers and seedheads can be admired up close.

This is a group 3 clematis, meaning that it blooms on the current year’s growth. It may be pruned to waist height in late winter to early spring for best performance.
